It may not be your average garden tool but once you find your own little Eden inside a Polytunnel, we guarantee you’ll be hooked!
Beginners need to consider some important things before they dive into the world of polytunnels, and these are some of the most important parts of construction: –
1. Door Options
- Hinged or sliding
- Opening inwards or outwards
There are so many types of polytunnel doors. And they can be made with a variety of materials! Complete polythene, a combination of polythene and net and more. There are lots of door options available to best suit your needs and requirements.
2. Ground Fixing
This is a really important part of any polytunnel. The way your structure is secured into the ground will determine its strength and longevity. But not all Polytunnels are built on soil or turf, so First Tunnels have 2 types of fixing available – Anchor Plates for soft earth and Base Plates for solid surfaces like concrete or timber sleepers.
3. Base Rails
These are the way to get a skin-tight cover on your Polytunnel. Whether you choose timber or aluminium is very much a personal preference and no doubt will be influenced by the location and ground surface. Base rails also eliminate the need to trench the Polythene cover of your Polytunnel, saving you hours of back-breaking toil.
4. Crop Bars and Support Braces
Maximising the usable space inside your Polytunnel is easy with crop bars and the twin support brace. Crop Bars are fixed across the hoops at head height and will increase your growing space by significantly, allowing you to create 2 tier growing. The twin Support Brace run the full length of the polytunnel and can be fitted either side of the central ridge, dramatically increases the strength of a polytunnel, providing extra protection against heavy winds on particularly exposed sites.
A very popular addition for Polytunnels. With a little planning and organising, staging can dramatically enhance your Polytunnel. Providing really usable working space and increasing your growing area too.
