The day your First Polytunnel arrives will be an exciting one!
When to Build Your Polytunnel
Although it suggests in the book “How to grow food in your Polytunnel all year round” early Spring is the best time to construct a Polytunnel, a fine, still, warm(ish) day is ideal, any time of the year. Not only will it make the job a lot more comfortable and enjoyable for you, any warmth from the sun’s rays trapped inside the poly-tunnel will also help the polythene become supple and easier to handle making it stretch then shrink back fitting drum-tight over the polytunnel hoops once the temperatures drop again.
If the weather is somewhat inclement, it’s really not worth attempting putting the polytunnels polythene cover on – (You wouldn’t want recreate a scene from Mary Poppins). Any attempt to cover a poly tunnel on a cold, blustery, rainy day will at best, result in a loose polythene cover that will flap in the wind and may shorten the life of the plastic. You really wouldn’t want that! So choose your window of opportunity and GO FOR IT!! See how easy it is to cover a Polytunnel.
Garden in Any Weather
You will soon realise when the rain is pouring down there are few better places to hide and get on with some digging. Any sunshine on a cold day will transform your bubble of polythene into summer. Polytunnels offer the gift of gardening outdoors, indoors – versatile, practical, cost-effective and somewhere to garden in comfort whatever the weather.
So when it’s cold and wet outdoors, imagine yourself gardening in a t-shirt warm and dry! Happy days and one of the reasons Polytunnels have become an increasingly popular choice for hobby and commercial growers over the last two decades.
As well as being used to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers, many polytunnels have been used to:
- house swimming pools
- shelter livestock
- cover ponds
With more and more people discovering the delights of growing their own fruit and vegetables, Polytunnels have made it possible to cultivate tender and more demanding plants in our unpredictable British climate, raising the stakes to grow a wider variety of winning crops all year round.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Polytunnels!
